» 'annaJo' (aka JO BRAZIER) and ANDREW DAVIES
'annaJo' (aka JO BRAZIER) and ANDREW DAVIES An evening of original songs and creative covers with annaJo and talented guitarist Andrew Davies. Born in Sussex, 'annaJo' has been writing songs for twelve years, receiving awards and acclaim for her musical achievements. She'll be playing a cool mix of originals and quality acoustic covers by everyone from Alicia Keys to Bon Jovi. An accomplished and natural live performer, annaJo has sung and played with a variety of bands and acoustic duos, but it is her solo work that separates her from the crowd. From jazz through to rock, blending sharp observation with gentle humour, warmth and compelling honesty, annaJo refuses to be pigeonholed, deftly using her distinctive voice to bind unique songs together with remarkable ease. Powerful, yet intimately subtle, annaJo sings with 'aplomb and sass', and turns heads wherever she goes. Find out more about 'annaJo' (aka JO BRAZIER) and ANDREW DAVIES

» South of 55th
South of 55th South of 55th, the five-piece phenomena influenced by the Chicago blues scene will be performing on The Tanners stage tonight following their success at the Festival of Sound. As a result of a migration of workers from the ‘deep south’ of America, the foundations for much of tonight’s music were laid in Chicago. Blues fan and front man of South of 55th, Neil Thompson, said: “Everything we play was a hit in its own right, and from the Windy City or not it has generated the vibe of the 50s, 60s and 70s clubs where it was popular.” A two-week visit to Chicago researching the Blues culture has given the band a valuable insight. Neil added: “Just playing the music isn’t the whole picture. Interaction with the audience is vital - they are out to be entertained.” The name South of 55th refers to the neighbourhoods where this music was played daily. Greats from the influential Chess Records company - Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Willie Dixon, feature strongly in the band’s performances. “We have a vast range of experience and musical interests away from the band, but this thing really works for us all”, Neil told The Resident newspaper. HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'Climate Change: The Evidence and the Sceptics' with Dr. Andy Russell In this month's talk at The Tanners, we'll have a quick look at the evidence for climate change and then examine some of the most common arguments against the consensus and assess the level of "scepticism" at work. Andrew is a Lecturer in climate science at Brunel University. His work focuses on European extreme events and Antarctic climate change. He often comments on weather and climate issues in the media. From natural cycles to global conspiracies, many arguments are used to challenge the scientific consensus on climate change. But how well do these arguments stand up and do the people using these arguments merit the label of skeptics? It promises to be an evening of great discussion. We kindly ask each person to give £2 to cover our guest speaker's expenses. Find out more about HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'Climate Change: The Evidence and the Sceptics' with Dr. Andy Russell

» Something Blue
Something Blue Always complimented on their harmonies, Rob and Sarah accidentally stumbled across something that worked for them when a student of Rob’s introduced them to Dave Rawlings. They chose to do one of his numbers at a gig the following day, and of all the songs they played, this was the one that they both lost themselves in and had those “moments” that musicians have when everything just works. Building on that, the duo got writing, and researching the genres of Americana and Bluegrass, and quickly put together many more songs that suited them, and that they loved playing. Sometimes they do dual harmonies all the way through, sometimes Sarah wails some riffs on the soprano sax while Rob sings. Some songs are a little jazzy, some are a little cheeky. Whatever genre this could be slotted into... it works for Something Blue (Americana / Bluegrass / Roots). Featuring Rob Skinner (guitar, vocals, percussion, drums, bass, mandolin, ukulele and banjo) and Sarah Rayner (saxophone, harmonica, vocals and percussion). Find out more about Something Blue

» CAPTAIN MORGAN'S BLUES VOYAGE featuring JAMIE MORGAN
CAPTAIN MORGAN'S BLUES VOYAGE featuring JAMIE MORGAN Born In Canada, raised in Sheffield, Jamie Morgan first fell in love with the Blues aged 16 whilst listening to Sonny Terry and Brownie Mghee. In fact he received such a visceral jolt from something he heard he sat up in bed and rewinded only to not be able to find what it was, he would hear it again upon Hearing SRV in a Virgin store sometime later, thus hooked, he was playing and gigging within 6 months of picking up a guitar. Playing In Blues and cover bands with old veterans and anyone he could was not all he had fantasized about though and after 3 years working hard, drinking too much and living hard, he sold his electric gear to fund a trip around the world aged 19, with an acoustic on his back he travelled in South America, Australia, Europe and the UK and didn’t land again till he was 27, Funding his travels with busking and street performance. The ups and downs of the next few years upon returning saw Jamie touring 100-250 gigs a year as a percussionist and community musician running workshops and events all over the world, It wasn’t the Blues but he was paying his dues. On the way to every job the music to inspire and move him was always the Blues, Particular that of Howlin’ Wolf, Otis rush and Buddy Guy. A particularly eventful 2 years involving separations and ill health aplenty impressed upon Jamie the need to get back to his first love and here he is, back with a fire! Not only has the blues followed everywhere he’s gone but he is a veteran at working groups of people into a frenzy. This is not Blues to sit back and relax to, though he can do that too, this is live music to inspire dancing, hollering and getting involved. By turns virtuosic and intensely primal and rhythmical, Jamie’s musical aim is to inspire others as his unknowing mentors have inspired him. Think Howling’ Wolf, Stevie Ray and Buddy Guy and then think again because Jamie is his own man. Jamie Morgan's brand of blues music is just something a bit pleasantly different! Try it for yourself by coming in to see it in person! Find out more about CAPTAIN MORGAN'S BLUES VOYAGE featuring JAMIE MORGAN

» HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'Werewolves' with Deborah Hyde
HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'Werewolves' with Deborah Hyde The werewolf is an enduring motif. Though there are many good werewolves in folklore, the prevalent type is the ravaging, insatiable beast. The werewolf so often stands for the heart of darkness of the human soul. This talk will explore how the motif was used during one of Europe's darkest eras - the Great Witch Hunt of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Deborah was our inaugural speaker at Horsham Skeptics in the pub and we're delighted to have the opportunity to host the first outing of her new talk. Those who came along to her last talk in Horsham will remember what a good quality speaker she is - both during the talk itself and durig the Q & A session. An intriguing evening for those of you who like to hear about something refreshingly different. We look forward to seeing you there! £2.00 per person to cover speaker's expenses. » RAY OWEN'S JUICY LUCY (Exclusive Tanners Arms Performance)
RAY OWEN'S JUICY LUCY (Exclusive Tanners Arms Performance) An extremely rare opportunity and a privilege to witness Ray Owen perform for you all (a Jimi Hendrix contemporary nonetheless). Ray Owen, the original frontman of cult rock pioneers Juicy Lucy, is one of the unsung heroes of British rock history. A black boy, born in the UK in 1947 and adopted by white parents, embarked on his musical adventure by becoming the bass player for the legendary Misunderstood. Following an encounter with German police and machine guns, a jam session with Eric Clapton and Dick Heckstall Smith at the Staines Supershow and a solo single (a cover of Bob Dylan's Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You released on Fontana), the Misunderstood became Juicy Lucy with Ray on Vocals. As the only band to ever have a hit with Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love (VO1 launching the Vertigo label, home to many top bands including Dire Straits, Metallica & Black Sabbath) and with one of the most vulgar album covers to date, they secured their importance in the rise of British blues rock. The band's founder, American born slide player Glenn Fernando Campbell, had a unique and unrivalled approach to the instrument, which led John peel to state, "Glenn is Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck rolled into one". The band stomped through the year playing venues such as the Middle Earth, The UFO, The Roundhouse, The Albert Hall (alongside Chuck Berry, Johnny Winter, Traffic, T-Rex, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac), The Speakeasy, Klooks Kleek, Reading University and the Brighton Dome, reaching their peak with an appearance on Top Of The pops in March 1970 performing Who Do You Love, which incidentally was used for a Burger King advert around 1999. In 1971 Polydor released Ray Owen's Moon, an album that would spawn a number 1 in the Belgian singles chart and was reviewed in November 2010 Classic Rock magazine as a lost nugget. Ray Owen's Moon had appearances at The Isle Of Wight Festival as well as The Festival Of The Midnight Sun in Scandinavia. During the flight Ray was seated next to Chuck Berry and upon arrival they shared a chillum under the stage! The obscure talent that is Ray Owen also happened to be the first person to play at The Hard Rock Cafe in June 1971 on the opening day, was let into Bath Festival for free with his entourage as it was assumed he was Jimi Hendrix, hung out with Tommy Vance on the banks of the River Thames drinking Jack, jammed with Marc Bolan at his home studio, gave singing lessons to Chrissie Hynde ("in bed!"), and was taken for a ride by Jeff Beck in his Ferrari. Having owned a Cobra AC30 during his late teens whilst working at Charing Cross Hospital as an Orderly, which he saved up to buy before his transition to rock star, how could he resist? Ray also fronted the late Vincent Crane's Atomic Rooster in the years up until his death, and had a brief spell with Killing Floor, who were poached from Ray to become Rory Gallagher's backing band. Ray is now fronting his own incarnation of Juicy Lucy, having previously revived the band in 1995, recording an album and playing the Malvern Fringe Festival and the Bulldog Rally. Ray Owen's Juicy Lucy perform tracks from the recently remastered first album, the Moon album, as well as new material and unreleased compositions from the last 40 years. To see Ray Owen live, the self-proclaimed native of planet Venusia, is to be teleported back to the innocence of the '60s British rock star, preserved intact, as if released from a time capsule. Definitely one gig you cannot afford to miss and one spectacular evening we guarantee will live long in your memory! Find out more about RAY OWEN'S JUICY LUCY (Exclusive Tanners Arms Performance)

» JAK / LUKE GODWIN / GRIT & GOLD / NO FACE @ THE TANNERS ARMS!
JAK / LUKE GODWIN / GRIT & GOLD / NO FACE @ THE TANNERS ARMS! It's the long awaited return of some of the best acts to come out of the local music scene rocking The Tanners stage. An exciting night of eclectic solo performers on one bill. Featuring: "JAK" - incorporates an 'Indie flair' to the folk side of things, putting on and headlining the return of some of the 'veterans' of the solo performance side of things, he is sure to AT LEAST MAKE YOU SING ONE of his songs. "LUKE GODWIN" - some of you would know him as 'The dude from Union Ashes, or that mentalist that uses his guitar as a pogo stick in Drop Out Luke. He uses this energy even when it is as stripped back as one man, one guitar. Enjoyable folk/punk songs written for the enjoyment and sing-along-ability. One to watch for sure. "GRIT & GOLD" - The LONG awaited return of local hit Gregk Foley, under his new alias 'Grit & Gold' I'm sure he'll be dazzling the audience with the elasticity of his vocal range, or how riffs THAT complex CAN be played whilst singing. 100% worth sitting and gawping at. And lastly "NO FACE" - we're pretty sure that everyone is becoming familiar with this name 'No Face' but it is just alias of front man off the local alternative rock band 'Blue Stragglers.' Playing songs that weren't quite meant to be played along with bass and drums but definitely loud enough to compensate. Definitely one gig to have a few whiskeys and relax knowing it's going to be a rocking Friday night! Find out more about JAK / LUKE GODWIN / GRIT & GOLD / NO FACE @ THE TANNERS ARMS!

» HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'The Spirit Level Delusion' with Chris Snowdon
HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'The Spirit Level Delusion' with Chris Snowdon Christopher Snowdon, author of "The Spirit Level Delusion" will be challenging the theory made in the best-selling book "The Spirit Level" that 'more equal societies almost always do better'. By fact-checking the book's statistics and reviewing the scientific literature, he will argue that there is no correlation between income inequality and a country's health, happiness and well-being. The hypothesis in "The Spirit Level" is, he says, based on selective evidence and flawed reasoning. Whatever your political affiliation, you will come away from this talk a little more sceptical about the various statistics you read or hear about from day to day. Christopher Snowdon is the author of "The Spirit Level Delusion" (2010), Velvet Glove, Iron Fist (2009), and most recently "The Art of Suppression". He has written about The Spirit Level debate in Spiked, The Guardian and the Wall Street Journal, and debated with its authors at the Royal Society of Arts in July 2010.
» NEVER THE TWAIN (aka Steve and Chris from Alter Ego)
NEVER THE TWAIN (aka Steve and Chris from Alter Ego) Introducing "Never the Twain" A dysfunctional duo featuring the joint efforts of Steve Dawson and Chris Anderson (Mr. Chris to his friends). Steve and Chris have played together in the popular covers band "Alter Ego" for the last few years, but both enjoy performing at open mic sessions doing acoustic renditions of their own material and well known classics. So much so that they have decided to go out and perform as a duo... The duo is somewhat dysfunctional as they have had very little time to get material together, so the evening usually features a set of solo songs from each of them followed by a set played together. It's unusual, a bit quirky, but most of all it's a lot of fun. Don't miss it!

» THE OLD TIRE SWINGERS (new US / Californian band on UK Tour)
THE OLD TIRE SWINGERS (new US / Californian band on UK Tour) A fantastic opportunity to see new US based band The Old Tire Swingers, who are on their first UK tour gracing their talented presence at The Tanners Arms tonight before travelling on to several London venues. Influenced by the Appalachian string bands as well as their own Central California country roots, they play a style that's somewhere between old time, bluegrass, and country, which has resulted in not only a set of traditional tunes but also their own blend of music which is The Old Tire Swingers. A typical Old Tire Swingers set, listeners will hear both traditional and original songs. Although much of the music the band plays is hard driving old time music, fans of bluegrass, country, acoustic, folk, and Americana are sure to find something they will enjoy in the songs. When Paul Chesterton first heard bluegrass music back in 2003, he fell in love with the banjo. He soon purchased his first banjo and started teaching himself how to play it. At a local bluegrass festival, he learned the claw hammer style at a pickin workshop, and after spending a couple of years focusing on his style and writing songs, Paul put together a hard driving, old time string band. Joined by Nick Kennedy on guitar, Frick Dau on upright bass, and Nathanael Felon on mandolin. Energized by the response they’ve received over the last year, they’ve recorded a full length 13 track CD which they will be touring in early 2012. » HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'Sharks Don't Get Cancer Myth' with Ben Hardwidge
HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'Sharks Don't Get Cancer Myth' with Ben Hardwidge In this talk, Brighton Skeptics' conservation enthusiast Ben Hardwidge will explore the theories behind using medicines derived from sharks and rays, and explain the devastating impact that this is having on our marine ecosystem. As well as this, he will also introduce the ideas behind a new scepticism campaign in development, which aims to raise awareness about medicines based on shark cartilage, while appealing to major retailers to stop stocking them. After millions of years serving as the oceans’ main apex predator, many shark species are now on the brink of extinction following just a few decades of indiscriminate finning, where sharks often have their fins cut off while they’re still alive, and are then dumped back into the sea. People often ask ‘where the harm?’ when it comes to using alternative medicine, and this talk will explain the very real and costly price of relying on unregulated bogus medicine to treat cancer. Stick in a Pot We're delighted to have back this five piece harmonic folk band sensation all the way from Brighton to perform again for you having played at one of our past Live Lounge nights. Just read about the rave press reviews for this band and it'll make you want to come down and see what all the hype is about! "A stick that sparkles" - The Resident. "Impressive... a fuzzy blur of traditional British folk and a shiny happy version of something not far from a classic REM" - Manchester Music mag. "This group in fact have an alarming amount of sensitivity brewing. The folky Brightonians (a folk band, from Brighton?! Never) produce music which is lively, sweet, Dylan-esque, and filled with lovely skittering strumming of various instruments, woven in and out of the vocals... . The singsong style with a wash of gentle guitar, and spiky drums to back it, is very reminiscent of the Stone Roses. There is something very nice happening here,... equally SiaP's lyrics show a real sense of humour... Very beautiful plinky plonky-ness" - the 405 online magazine. » The Long Goodbye
The Long Goodbye The Long Goodbye is led by singer songwriter Alfie Bernardi, a talented multi instru-mentalist who quotes Elliott Smith, Neil Young, Ryan Adams and Wilco as the band's main influences. His lyrics have been described as "haunting, introspective, and painfully real" and his voice as "unique, passionate and impossibly filled with emotion". Spending most of their time in a stable-turned-recording studio in the Sussex countryside, Alfie and Jake MacKay plus bassist Adam Williams and drummer Ben Marshall are now writing the follow up to the newly released album "Darkness Leaves", which further demonstrates their versatility and free-thinking style, and building up a cult following performing in many of the South Coast's leading venues, having supported the likes of Viarosa and The Redlands Palomino Company and appeared live on Phil Jackson's BBC Sussex radio show. Together they craft reflective songs about lost love, hope, desolation and restlessness and take their all-night heartbreaks to the masses. "All of their songs are self written and are of a consistently high standard. They are gifted musicians, with a style close to 1970's era country rock but with a modern edge. A band to keep an eye on!" MIKE MORRISON, MAVERICK MAGAZINE. "The Long Goodbye produce a set which changes pace with regularity, yet bristles with quality. A band well worth watching." EAST MAGAZINE. HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'Invisible Lives - thinking critically about transgender issues' with Juliet Jacques (a Guardian writer) Tonight's talk by Juliet Jacques, Guardian writer, longlisted for the George Orwell blogging prize in 2011. The emergence of gender variant people, practices and identities following the publication of Magnus Hirschfeld’s Transvestites (1909) and the inter-war invention of sex reassignment technologies posed considerable challenges to conservative, socialist, feminist and gay/lesbian politics: if ‘male’ and ‘female’ were no longer true, then what was? Consequently, transgender people became an object of fascination, and plenty was written about them - by the mainstream media, feminists and the medical establishment whose management of transsexualism has proved especially controversial - with transgender people themselves frequently excluded from the conversation, with their identities erased or discounted, or having their experiences framed by people or outlets with no lived experience of being transgender. Juliet Jacques, author of the Guardian’s Transgender Journey series which documents the gender reassignment process from a first-person perspective, critically examines some of the ideas and myths that grew around transgender people, and the gulf between mainstream political and media discussions of transgender issues and the autonomous transgender theory and identities that developed in response (£2 each for speaker expenses please!). SOUTH OF 55TH FEATURING STUART JAMES FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY! FOR ONE SENSATIONAL OCCASION, South of 55th, the phenomenal local band influenced by the Chicago blues scene will be performing on The Tanners stage tonight alongside our outrageously talented Electric Jam night host Stuart James on electric guitar duties. HORSHAM SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: 'When the Universe Came to the People' with Alice Sheppard Astronomy has been the subject of wonder and speculation for as long as historical records exist. As with all science, people got some things right - and, even with the best methods available, other things wrong. Since 2007, Alice Sheppard has run the Galaxy Zoo Forum, the discussion area for an online astronomy project with 300,000 members worldwide. Galaxy Zoo has so far produced 21 papers, whose authors and acknowledged contributors include several ordinary citizens. Some of its findings were a direct result of questions or collections of objects created by the users, who became "Citizen scientists". Alice takes us through some of the best and worst of astronomical history, and what ancient and modern mistakes are made today. We will hear the questions people have come to Galaxy Zoo with, the ways in which biases were found and dealt with by the scientists and participants, the beautiful and inspiring projects created by untrained people and the scientific thinking they learnt for themselves to apply. We also take a look at citizen science in general, how Galaxy Zoo taught large numbers of people to understand and use science, and explore what this might mean for skepticism. Alice is one of Cardiff Skeptics's two founders (the one who does the Internet stuff while Dean does the more important bit). Having worked as a secretary, a teacher (thrown out for caring more about science than exams), and an office supervisor for a charity for disabled people, and an occasional astronomy writer, she's now just moved to London to start an MSc in Astronomy.
